sliding scale pricing

motivated by equity and accessibility

As of February 2024, I am thrilled to introduce my new three tier pricing model for select works. This equity-based approach aims to strike a balance between compensating myself for my labor and keeping my work accessible to folks in my community.

Three tiers

My pricing tiers are determined by self-selection (see selection guidelines below). It's important to note that these tiers are not discounts, but rather the prices I am offering to individuals in different life circumstances. Please consider your own financial situation thoughtfully when selecting your tier. I won’t ask you any questions about your chosen tier, as I trust you to choose the one that's right for you.

The why

I want to emphasize that I’m doing this because I believe in this pricing model, not because I necessarily have the financial flexibility to offer my work at lower prices. To keep my business values aligned with my personal values, I’m always going to do my best to prioritize sustainability, accessibility, mutual aid, and reciprocal generosity over profit. Not only does offering a lower priced tier help push back against the inaccessibility rampant in the art world (and in general), but folks choosing a higher tier when they are able helps me to continue doing this work in my little corner of the universe.

tiers

So how does one go about selecting the tier that best fits their unique situation? Everyone’s financial situation is unique, and you may not fit exactly with all of the descriptors of each category; I’ll invite you to thoughtfully choose which one best fits your situation.

equity tier

Consider this tier if you:

  • are eligible for public assistance

  • are burdened with significant medical expenses and/or debt

  • are a single parent/caretaker of dependent(s)

  • are an unpaid community organizer

standard tier

Consider this tier if you:

  • are able to pay your bills with relative ease

  • do not struggle to meet your basic needs

  • own a car or have access to reliable transportation

  • have employer-supplied health insurance or other benefits

supporter tier

Consider this tier if you:

  • own the home you live in

  • haven’t checked your bank account before making food/coffee purchases in recent memory

  • are financially able to travel for leisure

still a stretch?

I do understand that even the equity tier is not affordable for everyone. If you are interested in a stole and are unable to pay the price listed, please reach out to me via email at info@molliedonihe.com. I am always open to payment plans, art exchanges/bartering, and other creative arrangements. It’s hard enough as it is to live under a system of capitalism. I have no desire to be beholden to its rigidity and norms. Let’s work together.

Are you a church wanting to purchase a stole?

I’m still figuring out how to get this pricing tier translated to congregations. If you’re interested in making a purchase from a congregational budget, for now, choose the tier that feels right to you. Here are some things to think about in comparison to what you know of other churches:

  • How many staff members does your church employ? (e.g. if your church employs one pastor with limited benefits at perhaps lower than a living wage, choose the equity tier. 2 or more full-time staff? Please consider the supporter tier.)

  • How many people do you have in your congregation?

  • What is your operating budget?

most of all, thank you.

Thank you for your desire to support me and my work, and I hope this new pricing model resonates with you as much as it does with me.

Lots of love,
Mollie

In working on this, I was heavily inspired by the model of Victoria van der Laan, who is not only an incredible artist but also an ardent striver toward more equitable access to art. I reached out to her for permission in using some of her framework in my own pricing model, which she enthusiastically offered. I can’t get enough of what she’s doing and am constantly inspired by her. You can read more about Victoria and her work on her website and on her instagram, where you’ll also find her amazing weekly Pay What You Can offerings.
